Madeira Flower Festival

Floral species originating in many parts of the world bloom in Madeira, as the island meets specific climatic conditions that allow species from both tropical and cold regions to flourish.

The Flower Festival is a tribute to spring, and the celebration of metamorphosis and rebirth, fertility and the abundance of the flowers that colour, perfume and inebriate the surrounding environment and that give value and take the good name of this tourist destination across borders. Find out more about what to expect from the Madeira Flower Festival, which will take place between the 2nd to 26th of May.

Flower Exhibition
The Flower Exhibition goes back to the 1950’s when it used to be held at the former Ateneu Comercial do Funchal.
Nowadays, this unique flower display takes place at Praça do Povo, in the centre of Funchal, and shows the finest
flowers grown with much care and devotion all around Madeira. The flowers in display are judged under various
categories and the best are awarded prizes by a panel of experts.
The Flower Festival is also a cultural event. Tradition is particularly associated with the event, whether through the performances of folk groups, or through the construction of the beautiful floral carpets. At the same time, homage is paid to flowers at the magnificent Flower Exhibition and the city is animated with music concerts and variety shows.
Other initiatives that are included on the schedule:
Flower Market
The flower market contributes to raise public awareness to the countless ornamental and floral species on the island. Visitors and locals can buy them in a picturesque setting.Flower Exhibition and Workshops

The Flower Exhibition is held in the centre of Funchal, at Praça do Povo. This exhibition is an extension of the exhibit held at the former Ateneu Comercial of Funchal. This unique flower display shows the finest flowers grown with much care and devotion, all around Madeira. The flowers in display are judged under various categories and the best are awarded prizes by a panel of experts.

In addition the Praça do Povo will also be the centre stage of several workshops and crafts exhibits.

Flower Carpets and Decorations

The abundance of Madeiran flora has greatly contributed to the establishing of this art form. This traditional creation of flower carpets thrives a little bit throughout the island and had its origins in the decoration of religious processions. Due to its undeniable beauty and detail, for the past several years, the flower carpets have been reproduced on the streets for the Flower Festival, establishing alongside the floral sculptures, a major contribution to the magnificence of the city’s decorations, as their careful construction is shared and admired by visiting tourists. These wonderful pieces of floral art are displayed in the central walkways of Avenida Arriaga.

 

Onion Festival, Caniço, Santa Cruz

The Onion Festival is the best known cultural event in Caniço. The main attractions of the weekend festival are a parade, several musical attractions and the opportunity to enjoy traditional delicacies.
Tractors and floats decorated with onions can be seen during the procession. Even some houses are decorated with onions! In the evening, you can enjoy traditional music, craft stalls and a selection of food and wine. This festival is a popular event for all ages.

Spring Concert, Madeira Mandolin Orchestra, Congresso Hall, Funchal

Celebrating the Flower Festival 2019 in Madeira, the Madeira Mandolin Orchestra, Europe’s oldest and youngest mandolin orchestra, holds a Special Spring Concert at the Madeira Congress Centre (Casino).
With the direction of Maestro João André Martins, the orchestra will play the most classic pieces of music to the sound of the mandolins and will be accompanied by great voices of soloists.
The concert will take place from 9 p.m., with the doors opening at 8:15 p.m., and will last approximately 120 minutes, with a 15-minute interval.
The ticket has a unit cost of 20 euros. Also OBM has two types of VIP seats in the audience with unit prices of 40 euros (package with concert ticket and a CD) and 65 euros (package with concert ticket, a CD and transport to and from the concert venue) , being available in the usual places and online.

International Museum Day – most museums on the island

On this day most museums are free of charge to enter, and it is possible to visit their exhibits and participate in initiatives prepared exclusively for this commemorative day. The opening hours are also extended so that more visitors have the opportunity to visit the museums. Some of the museums adhere to the European Museums Night, allowing visitors to enjoy the institutions cultural offerings outside normal hours.

Trout & Cider Festival, Santana
May 22 all-day
The Casa do Povo of São Roque do Faial will organize the IX Festival of the Trout / Cider Route / XXVI Meeting of Cultural Groups of the Municipality of Santana.  This project promotes the typical products of the parish, trout and cider, in order to leverage the local and regional economy, thus increasing the income of farmers and restaurateurs. This party will take place throughout the parish and intends to involve as many people as possible. At Ribeiro Frio, there will be traditional music, free cider,  and a demonstration of sport fishing. At Achada do Cedro Gordo we will provide training to cider producers, whose objective is to sensitize farmers to produce more pears / apples and use of abandoned orchards. There will be a blind test of cider with the local producers, where the best cider will be awarded. In the center of the parish we will have the gastronomy and the musical animation provided by the cultural groups of Santana and live music with  Álvaro Florença & Band.

Madeira Mandolin Orchestra, Congresso Hall, Funchal

Directed by Maestro André Martins, the orchestra is composed by 27 performers between the ages of 12 and 40, and its repertoire consists of classic music by composers such as Kètèlbey, Vivaldi, Ponchieli, Strauss, among others.
The concert will take place at the Madeira Congress Centre (Funchal) from 9 pm, with the duration of approximately 60 minutes. The opening of the doors takes place from 20:00, and the ticket has a costs 20 euros.
