Madeira Flower Festival
May 23 @ 12:00 am

Floral species originating in many parts of the world bloom in Madeira, as the island meets specific climatic conditions that allow species from both tropical and cold regions to flourish.

The Flower Festival is a tribute to spring, and the celebration of metamorphosis and rebirth, fertility and the abundance of the flowers that colour, perfume and inebriate the surrounding environment and that give value and take the good name of this tourist destination across borders. Find out more about what to expect from the Madeira Flower Festival, which will take place between the 2nd to 26th of May.
Floral Sculptures
The Madeiran flora’s diversity widely contributes for the establishment of these artistic manifestations which combine the beauty of the flowers with the characteristic Madeiran traditional and cultural elements. The floral sculptures are a great contribute for the magnificence of the city decorations, which construction is shared and admired by our visitors. These marvellous sculptures shall be displayed on the last weekend of the Flower Festival in Avenida Sá Carneiro, at the entrance of the pier of Funchal, and near the Regional Parliament of Madeira.
23rd to 26th  May

Flower Exhibition

Nowadays, this unique flower display takes place at Praça do Povo, in the centre of Funchal, and shows the finest
flowers grown with much care and devotion all around Madeira. The flowers in display are judged under various
categories and the best are awarded prizes by a panel of experts.
The Flower Festival is also a cultural event. Tradition is particularly associated with the event, whether through the performances of folk groups, or through the construction of the beautiful floral carpets. At the same time, homage is paid to flowers at the magnificent Flower Exhibition and the city is animated with music concerts and variety shows.
Other initiatives that are included on the schedule:
Flower Market
The flower market contributes to raise public awareness to the countless ornamental and floral species on the island. Visitors and locals can buy them in a picturesque setting.Flower Exhibition and Workshops

Flower Carpets and Decorations

The abundance of Madeiran flora has greatly contributed to the establishing of this art form. This traditional creation of flower carpets thrives a little bit throughout the island and had its origins in the decoration of religious processions. Due to its undeniable beauty and detail, for the past several years, the flower carpets have been reproduced on the streets for the Flower Festival, establishing alongside the floral sculptures, a major contribution to the magnificence of the city’s decorations, as their careful construction is shared and admired by visiting tourists. These wonderful pieces of floral art are displayed in the central walkways of Avenida Arriaga.

Rampa dos Barreiros, Funchal
May 24 @ 9:00 pm

Rampa dos Barreiros – time trial for classic cars. This year the Rampa will be held in the evening of the 24th, so even more exciting!

The “Rampa dos Barreiros” was the first speed race held in Madeira in 1935 and was won by Ribeiro Ferreira at the wheel of a fabulous Bugatti.
The object of the race is for the cars to make three separate circuits of a short course in exactly the same time. The car that manages the closest time to their original run wins the competition.
There will be 60 classic cars competing along the route very similar to the original route in 1935. The cars will all start from Avenida Sa Carneiro and finish at the gate of Quinta Magnolia. One of the best places to view the cars will be at the bridge of Ribeiro Seco. Every car in the race will arrive at 30 second intervals – and in between you will be entertained by the exhibitions’ very own “special policeman” on duty at Ponte do Ribeiro Seco.
